USPSTF Recommendation on Behavioral Counseling to Promote Healthy Diet, Physical Activity for CVD Prevention
JAMA
EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 11 A.M. (ET), TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2022
Media advisory: To contact the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, email the Media Coordinator at Newsroom@USPSTF.net or call 301-951-9203. The full report and related articles are linked to this news release.

Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that clinicians individualize the decision to offer or refer adults without cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors to behavioral counseling interventions to promote a healthy diet and physical activity. Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death in the United States. A large proportion of CVD cases can be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors, including smoking, obesity, diabetes, elevated blood pressure, lack of physical activity and unhealthy diet. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services, and this recommendation is consistent with its 2017 recommendation.

About The Study: In this study involving 994,000 adults from U.S. states and territories, a slight decrease in the prevalence of current (past 30 days) e-cigarette use was found between 2018 and 2020. This decrease was mainly observed among young adults ages 18 to 20. In contrast, daily e-cigarette use consistently increased, particularly among young adults ages 21 to 24. This increase in daily use suggests greater nicotine dependence among those who use e-cigarettes, warranting continued surveillance.

About The Study: In this study of 3,448 active-duty service members transitioning out of the military, the prevalence of problematic anger two years after separation (31.2%) was nearly double the prevalence two years before separation (15.9%). Problematic anger was associated with behavioral health problems, relationship health concerns and economic difficulties approximately five years later. These findings suggest the need to equip service members proactively with skills to identify and manage anger as a way to support them before and during this period of transition.

On weekdays, the journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research and commentary in more than 40 medical and health subject areas. Every article is free online from the day of publication.
About The Study: In this study of 398 offspring in Canada, those with a same-sex parent with an anxiety disorder were more likely to have an anxiety disorder than offspring with an opposite-sex parent with an anxiety disorder, a finding that suggests a possible role of environmental factors in the transmission of anxiety from parents to children. Future studies should establish whether treating parents’ anxiety may protect their children from developing an anxiety disorder.

About The Study: In this multi-institutional, cross-sectional study that included 885 residents, results suggest that surgical trainees perceived to be white were, on average, granted similar amounts of autonomy as trainees perceived to be African American or Black or Hispanic or Latinx. However, some gaps in autonomy emerged in the second year, when operative autonomy increases faster for trainees perceived to be white. By the end of residency, differences were no longer significant.
