Association Between PSA Screening, Prostate Cancer Mortality Among Non-Hispanic Black, Non-Hispanic White Veterans

About The Study: In this study of 45,800 U.S. veterans, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening was associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer–specific mortality (PCSM) among non-Hispanic Black men and non-Hispanic white men. Compared with less frequent screening, annual screening was associated with decreased risk of PCSM among Black men but not among white men, suggesting that annual screening may be particularly important for Black men.

On weekdays, the journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research and commentary in more than 40 medical and health subject areas. Every article is free online from the day of publication.

About The Study: A comparison of gun-related deaths with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-reported COVID-19-related deaths suggests that the direct mortality effects of SARS-CoV-2 on children may be similar in magnitude to indirect outcomes mediated by gun violence. Factors that may have caused the observed increase in gun-related deaths among children are unknown and may include psychological and economic strain due to the pandemic as well as greater time spent at home due to school closures. These findings highlight the potential importance of indirect health outcomes in children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study limitations include analysis of a large gun violence database and confounding due to the study’s observational design.

On weekdays, the journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research and commentary in more than 40 medical and health subject areas. Every article is free online from the day of publication.

About The Study: The findings of this study including 3,168 adolescents suggest that two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine were associated with high levels of protection against emergency department and urgent care encounters related to the Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 in the first few months after vaccination. However, effectiveness waned over time, especially against Omicron. A third dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was associated with improved protection against Omicron beyond that seen initially after two doses, underscoring the importance of boosters for adolescents ages 12 to 17.

About The Study: In this cross-sectional study of 2,031 U.S. adults with children 6 months through 4 years old, half indicated they intended to get their child a COVID-19 vaccine at some point, but only one-fifth intended to do so within three months of the child’s eligibility. These findings suggest that considerable efforts to increase parental COVID-19 vaccine confidence for children in this age group may be needed to maximize COVID-19 vaccination for this age group.

About The Study: The results from this study of 173 supermarkets in a large regional chain indicate that calorie labeling was associated with small to moderate decreases in calories purchased from prepared bakery and deli items seven months after labeling implementation. These declines may lead to population-level health benefits if they translate to similar changes in consumption.

About The Study: Researchers found in this study of 788,000 adult smokers that the annual prevalence of past-year quit attempts decreased in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first decrease since 2011. Simultaneously, compared with expected sales, observed sales of nicotine replacement therapy brands from representative retail scanner data across 31 states decreased. These findings suggest that smokers experiencing disproportionately negative outcomes during the pandemic should be reengaged and assisted in quit attempts.

About The Study: In this study including 62,000 survey participants, everyday discrimination was associated with significantly increased odds of moderate to severe depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. This association was stronger among participants self-identifying as Hispanic or Latino or non-Hispanic Asian when the main reason for discrimination was race, ancestry or national origins.

About The Study: In this study of 12,000 Medicare beneficiaries with heart failure at risk for requiring a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), Black patients were less likely than white patients to receive an LVAD and female patients were less likely than male patients to receive LVAD therapy. One-year survival among groups was similar after adjusting for individual poverty and community-level social determinants of health. Inequity in LVAD access may have resulted from differences in clinician decision-making because of systemic racism and discrimination, implicit bias or patient preference.

USPSTF Recommendation on Behavioral Counseling to Promote Healthy Diet, Physical Activity for CVD Prevention

JAMA

EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 11 A.M. (ET), TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2022

Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that clinicians individualize the decision to offer or refer adults without cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors to behavioral counseling interventions to promote a healthy diet and physical activity. Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death in the United States. A large proportion of CVD cases can be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors, including smoking, obesity, diabetes, elevated blood pressure, lack of physical activity and unhealthy diet. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services, and this recommendation is consistent with its 2017 recommendation.

About The Study: In this study involving 994,000 adults from U.S. states and territories, a slight decrease in the prevalence of current (past 30 days) e-cigarette use was found between 2018 and 2020. This decrease was mainly observed among young adults ages 18 to 20. In contrast, daily e-cigarette use consistently increased, particularly among young adults ages 21 to 24. This increase in daily use suggests greater nicotine dependence among those who use e-cigarettes, warranting continued surveillance.

About JAMA Network Open: JAMA Network Open is the new online-only open access general medical journal from the JAMA Network. On weekdays, the journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical research and commentary in more than 40 medical and health subject areas. Every article is free online from the day of publication.

About The Study: In this study of 3,448 active-duty service members transitioning out of the military, the prevalence of problematic anger two years after separation (31.2%) was nearly double the prevalence two years before separation (15.9%). Problematic anger was associated with behavioral health problems, relationship health concerns and economic difficulties approximately five years later. These findings suggest the need to equip service members proactively with skills to identify and manage anger as a way to support them before and during this period of transition.

Authors: Amy B. Adler, Ph.D., of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland, is the corresponding author.
