EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: 11 A.M. (ET), TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2022
Media advisory: To contact the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, email the Media Coordinator at Newsroom@USPSTF.net or call 301-951-9203. The full report and related articles are linked to this news release.
Bottom Line: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults ages 40 to 75 who have one or more CVD risk factors (i.e., dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, or smoking), clinicians should prescribe a statin for those with an estimated 10-year CVD risk of 10% or greater and selectively offer a statin for those with an estimated risk of 7.5% to less than 10%. The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to make a recommendation about initiating a statin for the primary prevention of CVD events and mortality in adults age 76 or older. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, the cause of more than 1 of every 4 deaths. The USPSTF routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services, and this recommendation replaces and is generally consistent with its 2016 recommendation.

About The Study: The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis of 141 articles suggest that with the evolution of mutant strains, the incubation period of COVID-19 decreased gradually from Alpha (5 days) to Omicron variant (3.42 days). Identifying the incubation period of different variants is a key factor in determining the isolation period.

About The Study: In this survey study of 135,000 adults, less than half (48.5%) of individuals who had been fully vaccinated nationwide had received a booster dose. Marked variations were seen across geographic locations, occupation types, and other sociodemographic characteristics. Targeted efforts at populations with low uptake may be needed to improve booster vaccine coverage.

About The Study: In this observational study of nearly 720,000 pharmacy claims data, out-of-pocket cost of naloxone had been an increasingly substantial barrier to naloxone access for uninsured patients, potentially limiting use among this population, which constituted approximately 20% of adults with opioid use disorder.

About The Study: This analysis at a large urban hospital found a severe decline in surgical procedure volumes across a multitude of subspecialties during the COVID-19 peak and that after the peak and vaccine release periods the overall volume did not fully recover, with inconsistent recovery rates across subspecialties. About The Study: The results of this study in Los Angeles County of 210 adults with recent Omicron variant infection suggest that more than half were unaware of their infectious status and that awareness was higher among health care employees than nonemployees, yet it was still low overall. About The Study: In this study of rural communities in 10 states, 79% of people using drugs reported past-30-day methamphetamine use. Nonfatal overdose was greatest in people using both methamphetamine and opioids vs opioids or methamphetamine alone. People using both substances reported the least access to treatment. These findings suggest that harm reduction and substance use disorder treatment interventions must address methamphetamine use as well as opioids to decrease overdose in rural communities.

About The Study: Gout was more common in adults self-reporting Black race during a recent 10-year period compared with their white counterparts in this nationally representative study. These racial differences may be explained by sex-specific differences in diet and social determinants of health and clinical factors. Culturally informed efforts focusing on these factors could reduce current gout-related disparities.

About The Study: In this study of nearly 3,200 individuals who were injured while using electric scooters or bicycles in Oslo, Norway, electric scooter riders, compared with bicyclists, were younger, less frequently wearing a helmet, more often intoxicated and were more often injured at night. The rate of intoxication among electric scooter riders injured at night was high. Preventive measures, including awareness campaigns, regulating electric scooter availability, improving infrastructure, and implementing stricter helmet and alcohol policies, may prove effective for reducing injuries.

About The Study: Among 127,000 patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test, health care use was elevated six months after the acute infection compared with patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 test results. About The Study: In this study of 45,800 U.S. veterans, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening was associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer–specific mortality (PCSM) among non-Hispanic Black men and non-Hispanic white men. Compared with less frequent screening, annual screening was associated with decreased risk of PCSM among Black men but not among white men, suggesting that annual screening may be particularly important for Black men.

About The Study: A comparison of gun-related deaths with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-reported COVID-19-related deaths suggests that the direct mortality effects of SARS-CoV-2 on children may be similar in magnitude to indirect outcomes mediated by gun violence. Factors that may have caused the observed increase in gun-related deaths among children are unknown and may include psychological and economic strain due to the pandemic as well as greater time spent at home due to school closures. These findings highlight the potential importance of indirect health outcomes in children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study limitations include analysis of a large gun violence database and confounding due to the study’s observational design.

About The Study: The findings of this study including 3,168 adolescents suggest that two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine were associated with high levels of protection against emergency department and urgent care encounters related to the Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 in the first few months after vaccination. However, effectiveness waned over time, especially against Omicron. A third dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was associated with improved protection against Omicron beyond that seen initially after two doses, underscoring the importance of boosters for adolescents ages 12 to 17.

About The Study: In this cross-sectional study of 2,031 U.S. adults with children 6 months through 4 years old, half indicated they intended to get their child a COVID-19 vaccine at some point, but only one-fifth intended to do so within three months of the child’s eligibility. These findings suggest that considerable efforts to increase parental COVID-19 vaccine confidence for children in this age group may be needed to maximize COVID-19 vaccination for this age group.

About The Study: Researchers found in this study of 788,000 adult smokers that the annual prevalence of past-year quit attempts decreased in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first decrease since 2011.
