JAMA Psychiatry 10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2026.0171April 01, 2026 at 11:00 AM EDT
Is the dementia of severe schizophrenia a distinct clinical entity? In this cohort study, 155 individuals with severe, extremely treatment-resistant schizophrenia were characterized. The pattern of cognitive impairments differed from those of Alzheimer disease, frontotemporal dementia, and Lewy body dementia, but recapitulated and intensified that of community-dwelling schizophrenia. This study accords with previous work suggesting that dementia is a common outcome of schizophrenia and may arise from the illness itself.
