Can brief cognitive behavioral therapy (BCBT) for suicide prevention reduce suicide attempts and suicidal ideation among high-risk suicidal US military personnel and veterans? In this randomized clinical trial of 108 US military personnel and veterans reporting recent suicidal ideation and/or suicidal behaviors, participants who received BCBT were less likely to attempt suicide during follow-up as compared with participants who received present-centered therapy (PCT), an active comparator. Participants receiving BCBT and PCT demonstrated significant reductions in suicidal ideation with no differences between the treatment groups. This study found that BCBT is effective for preventing suicide attempts among high-risk military personnel and veterans.
