Mental Health Outcomes in Transgender and Nonbinary People
JAMA Psychiatry 10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2025.1850August 06, 2025 at 11:00 AM EDT
What available evidence describes mental health and neurodevelopmental outcomes in transgender (trans) and nonbinary people? In this umbrella review, data from 24 reviews demonstrated consistent evidence of worse mental health and neurodevelopmental outcomes in trans and nonbinary people compared to cisgender or general population groups. This review suggests stark inequalities in mental health outcomes for trans and nonbinary people, but also highlights the gaps and limitations of the existing evidence base; research acknowledging the diversity among people minoritized by their gender identity and investigating the mental health outcomes for multiply disadvantaged trans and nonbinary people is urgently required.
