What is the prevalence of intentional outdoor tanning and what factors are associated with this behavior? This cross-sectional study of 31 615 US adults found that 35.6% of women and 26.6% of men engage in intentional outdoor tanning, with a higher prevalence (51.7%) among women aged 18 to 24 years. Factors associated with intentional outdoor tanning were physical activity, alcohol use, and sunburn. These findings support the need to address intentional outdoor tanning in the context of skin cancer prevention; the variation in demographic and behavioral factors points to avenues for future research and interventions.
