Risk and Protective Factors Associated With HIV-Related Mortality in Children Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy

Which modifiable risk and protective factors are associated with HIV-related mortality among children and young adolescents receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART)?In this model-based meta-regression analysis linking data from 67 cohort studies of pediatric HIV-related mortality with Global Burden of Disease study covariates, access to improved water, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine third-dose (PCV3) coverage, and maternal education were the strongest protective factors. Simulated increases in these covariates showed substantial reductions in the odds of mortality.This study found that interventions to expand access to clean water, vaccination, and maternal education may foster protective environments that reduce disparities in survival outcomes among children and adolescents living with HIV who are receiving ART.
