Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation and the Incidence of Cardiovascular Disease

Is hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) associated with lower incidence of cardiovascular disease?This cohort study matched 3395 patients who underwent HGNS with controls who met HGNS candidacy criteria but did not undergo implantation. While data on obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease severity were unavailable, HGNS was associated with a lower hazard of diabetes diagnosis and hypertension diagnosis but not associated with minor or major cardiovascular event diagnosis after 2 years.These findings suggest benefits of HGNS on incident diabetes and hypertension; further research is needed to clarify potential long-term associations with subsequent cardiovascular events.
