Low-Dose Aspirin and Central Presbycusis

Does low-dose aspirin affect the rate of central auditory pathway degeneration in elderly adults?In this randomized clinical trial of 124 elderly individuals with hearing loss, 100 mg of aspirin taken daily had no measurable effect on sound detection levels, central auditory processing or speech perception ability. However, within-participants changes were observed over time in auditory neural function and binaural processing that were independent of peripheral hearing levels.The trial results suggest that central presbycusis severe enough to affect everyday communication is common in healthy adults 70 years and older.
