Lower Music Volume Levels in Fitness Class and Perceived Exercise Intensity

Can music volume in group fitness classes be lowered without impacting perceived exercise intensity?In this comparative effectiveness study of 189 group fitness class attendees, classes with at least a 3-dBA reduction in music sound levels showed noninferior ratings of perceived exertion compared with louder sessions, as measured by the validated Borg Category-Ratio–10 scale.Music volume can be reduced in group fitness classes without diminishing perceived workout intensity, supporting the implementation of safer acoustic practices and increased awareness of hearing protection in recreational fitness settings.
