Serum Metabolomics for Prognostic Stratification in Resected Advanced-Stage Oral Cavity Cancer
JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery 10.1001/jamaoto.2025.4267December 04, 2025 at 11:00 AM EST
Can serum metabolomics identify biomarkers predictive of relapse and survival in resected oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC)?In this cohort study including 228 patients with advanced-stage disease and a high prevalence of betel quid exposure, a novel serum metabolite-based prognostic scoring system was developed and validated. Patients with a high score (≥11) demonstrated worse 5-year local control, neck control, distant metastases, disease-free survival, and disease-specific survival compared with those with lower scores (<11).Serum metabolomic profiling enhances prognostic stratification in OCSCC and could inform personalized therapeutic decisions.
