Modest and Variable Correlations Between Geographic Atrophy Enlargement Rates in Fellow Eyes in the AREDS2 Study

How strong is the correlation in geographic atrophy (GA) enlargement rates between fellow eyes?In this post hoc analysis of 193 participants with bilateral GA in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), correlation in 2-year area enlargement rates was moderate for untransformed rates, weak to moderate for square root rates, and very weak for perimeter-adjusted rates. Strength of correlation varied substantially according to GA characteristics, including area and foveal involvement.Results suggest that the GA enlargement rate in 1 eye often does not consistently predict the enlargement rate in the fellow eye; this assumption should be used cautiously in designing clinical trials or inferring treatment effects.
