Financial Compensation Among US Academic Ophthalmologists

What are the differences in US academic ophthalmologist compensation by rank and how may this change over the years?This economic evaluation of an average of 1470 academic ophthalmologists each year from the Association of American Medical Colleges Faculty Salary Survey from 2016 to 2024 found that women earn less than men on average leading to a $1.04 million difference in career compensation. If trends continue, pay gaps can be closed for lower ranks but never at the professor and chair levels.These results suggest that women at higher ranks will continue to make less than men unless systemic change is made.
