Hearing Impairment and Visual Rehabilitation Outcomes

How is hearing impairment associated with functional outcomes of vision rehabilitation?In this cross-sectional study including 611 participants receiving vision rehabilitation, those with hearing impairment were less likely to achieve a minimum clinically important difference in Activity Inventory ability after rehabilitation despite similar baseline visual function. The association remained after adjustment for covariates and did not differ by hearing aid use.These findings suggest hearing impairment is independently associated with a lower likelihood of functional gains from vision rehabilitation, underscoring needs for interdisciplinary rehabilitation strategies that are more effective for patients with dual sensory impairment.
