Intracameral Cefuroxime Use in Cataract Surgery After Penicillin Allergy Reclassification

How does penicillin allergy label reclassification and enhanced pharmacy guidance alter rates of intracameral cefuroxime use by cataract surgeons?In this quality improvement study that included 1905 patients with penicillin allergy labels and 3077 cataract surgeries performed by 51 surgeons, mean use of intracameral cefuroxime increased after the policy intervention date compared with before the policy intervention date (by 71% vs 2%, respectively).Implementing structured allergy reclassification and pharmacy collaboration policies may support more appropriate and consistent antibiotic use in patients with penicillin allergy labels undergoing cataract surgery.
