What are the prevalence, common risk determinants, and patient-centered and economic associations of undiagnosed age-related eye diseases among community-dwelling older Asian adults? In this cross-sectional cohort study, more than 30% of adults aged 60 years and older had at least 1 undiagnosed age-related eye disease; younger adults, multifocal glasses wearers, and those of Malay or Indian ethnicities had greater odds of undiagnosed disease. Additionally, it was found that individuals with undiagnosed eye diseases report lower health- or vision-related quality of life, greater likelihood of visual impairment, and higher health care costs compared with those with no eye diseases or diagnosed eye conditions. These results support targeted screening programs to try to reduce the likelihood of adverse outcomes among individuals at high risk.
