Family Physicians’ Views of Who They Are Accountable To and Current Quality Metrics

What are primary care physicians’ views on current approaches to demonstrate accountability for their work to health care administrators, and what changes would they like to see in the common quality metrics?In this qualitative study, 36 family physicians in focus groups said they were accountable to many stakeholders and that all stakeholders in the health care system should be held equally accountable. Participants reported moral distress created by conflicts between common quality metrics and patient-centric care and called for many changes to existing approaches.These findings suggest that assessments of the quality of primary care work should be reimagined by all stakeholders.
