Research Mentoring During Times of Crisis

What strategies do notable research mentors use to mentor during crises?In this qualitative study of 15 award-winning physician mentors, several key themes emerged: during challenging times related to uncertain research funding, mentors guided their mentees in identifying diverse funding sources and considering alternative areas of research focus and they coached their mentees’ mindsets toward creativity and resiliency. Mentors developed a personal relationship with the mentee, shared character-focused mentorship, provided forthright feedback, and networked on behalf of the mentee.Results of this study suggest that certain mentoring approaches may be useful to mentors now and during future crises in academic medicine.
