Hurricanes, Neighborhood Disadvantage, and Cardiopulmonary Health in US Veterans

What are the associations between hurricane exposure and cardiovascular and respiratory events among US veterans?In this cohort study of more than 1 million US veterans, exposure to Hurricanes Sandy and Harvey was not significantly associated with cardiopulmonary events. Instead, higher levels of neighborhood disadvantage, age, and sex were factors associated with cardiopulmonary events.This study demonstrates the importance of considering preexisting regional differences and illustrates how prior health status can modify the association between hurricanes and adverse health outcomes.
