Does a conversational artificial intelligence (AI)-based platform reduce psychiatric symptoms compared with face-to-face group therapy or a waiting list control? In this randomized clinical trial of 995 university students, the AI intervention was associated with greater reduction in anxiety and improvement in well-being than both comparators, and greater reductions in depression and life satisfaction than the waiting list control; no significant differences were observed for posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. The findings of this study suggest that conversational AI interventions may represent scalable adjuncts to mental health care.
