Body Mass Index and Survival in Children Receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Is body mass index (BMI) associated with outcomes in children supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)?In this cohort study of 8885 children receiving ECMO support, one-fourth were classified as having underweight or obesity. Both underweight and obesity were independently associated with higher hospital mortality.These findings suggest that BMI-based nutritional status may help guide ECMO candidacy and nutritional management during ECMO support.
