Modeling Oxygen Saturation Targets, Mortality, and Retinopathy Among Extremely Preterm Infants

What are the trade-offs between mortality and treated retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) with universal adoption of a higher vs lower oxygen saturation target range in extremely preterm (gestational age 23-27 weeks) infants?In this decision analytical modeling study in 19 050 simulated infants based on US national birth data, local baseline risks were associated with different trade-offs between mortality and treated ROP. Universal adoption of a higher oxygen saturation target range may be preferable if more than 4 cases of treated ROP per 1 death averted were acceptable.These findings suggest that decisions about oxygen saturation target ranges may vary and depend on how stakeholders value the trade-off between reduced mortality and an increased risk of treated ROP.
