Severity of Chronic Kidney Disease and Outcomes After Admission to the Intensive Care Unit

How is the severity of chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with mortality, kidney replacement therapy (KRT), and length of stay after intensive care unit (ICU) admission?In this population-based cohort study of 531 090 Canadian residents admitted to the ICU, CKD was present in 25% of participants. Increasing CKD severity was associated with progressively higher mortality, greater likelihood of 90-day KRT dependence, and longer ICU and hospital stays.This study suggests that increasing CKD severity is associated with adverse outcomes after ICU admission and should inform risk stratification, prognostication, and discussions about goals of care.
