Sociodemographic, Health Care, and Clinical Factors Associated With Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Uptake Among US Adults With Obesity

What factors are associated with the uptake of metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) among individuals with an incident diagnosis of obesity?In this cohort study of 109 849 adults with an incident obesity diagnosis, 3.0% received MBS within 12 months of index. MBS uptake was associated with body mass index category, female sex, provider type (which includes medical institutions and organizations as well as health care professionals), and several medication and diagnostic factors.This study suggests that uptake of MBS is low and patterned by demographic, clinical, and health care factors, highlighting opportunities to improve access to MBS through targeted policies and interventions.
