How well do syncope risk scores identify patients at low risk for short-term adverse outcomes, and how do they compare with unstructured emergency department (ED) physician estimation? This cohort study of 1263 patients aged 40 years or older who presented to the ED with syncope or presyncope validated both the Canadian Syncope Risk Score (CSRS) and FAINT score. The FAINT score, but not the CSRS, was more sensitive than physicians for estimating adverse outcomes. These findings suggest that both the CSRS and FAINT scores have potential to inform ED syncope management, although implementation studies are needed to assess effectiveness.
