Pharmacist Outreach and SGLT2 Inhibitor Uptake in Patients With Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease

Is pharmacist-led offering of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors to eligible patients through proactive outreach associated with improved medication uptake compared with usual care?In this quality improvement study of 8658 adults with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, patients that received the pharmacist intervention were twice as likely to be prescribed an SGLT2 inhibitor and twice as likely to fill their prescription 12 months later compared with patients in the usual care group, a statistically significant difference.The findings suggest pharmacist-led outreach may significantly increase SGLT2 inhibitor initiation among patients, although limited penetration of the intervention may have constrained overall impact.
