Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Access and Patient Diversity

What is the association between broadening access to hematopoietic cell transplant through the use of mismatched unrelated donors and access for racially and ethnically underrepresented patients and socioeconomically or structurally disadvantaged populations?In this cross-sectional study of 672 patients comparing the ACCESS trial, which enrolled patients without matched donors, with a similar clinical trial and a clinical cohort, ACCESS enrolled a more racially and ethnically diverse population (47% vs 15% and 9%, respectively) and participants with more social disadvantage and lower income.These findings suggest that broadening eligibility criteria may increase diversity and access to hematopoietic cell transplant, underscoring the need for systemic interventions to address persistent inequities.
