Chronic Kidney Disease Severity and Risk of Cognitive Impairment

Is chronic kidney disease (CKD) severity associated with incident cognitive impairment among patients with CKD?In this cohort study of 5607 participants with CKD, a higher urinary protein to creatinine ratio was associated with impairments in attention and processing speed as well as executive function, while a lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was not associated with any cognitive impairment end points after adjusting for the urinary protein to creatinine ratio. The combination of a higher urinary protein to creatinine ratio and a lower eGFR was associated with impairments in global cognition.This study suggests that a more advanced CKD stage is associated with cognitive impairment.
