Characteristics and Outcomes of Adults Hospitalized With Childhood-Onset Complex Chronic Conditions

What are the characteristics and outcomes of hospitalizations of young adults with childhood-onset complex chronic conditions (4Cs)?In this cohort study of 19 915 hospitalizations among 15 072 young adults (aged 18-39 years), 4Cs were present in 6.7% of hospitalizations, 10.7% of hospital bed-days, and 5.4% of individuals. Hospitalizations of patients with 4Cs involved longer lengths of stay and greater costs and readmission rates compared with hospitalizations of patients without 4Cs.The findings suggest that patients with 4Cs should be prioritized in adult hospitals for targeted measures to reduce inpatient stays and improve care.
