Parental Understanding and Implementation of Early Peanut Introduction

Since the publication of guidelines recommending early peanut introduction (EPI), how do parents of infants perceive, understand, and implement them?In this qualitative study, thematic analysis of 49 parent interviews found that although parents were not opposed to EPI, many felt its purpose was to test whether their child had a peanut allergy. This understanding led to variability in when and how EPI was practiced; concerns about severe allergic reaction and lack of belief in EPI prevention serve as barriers.These findings suggest that there is confusion around the purpose, timing, frequency and duration, and risk factors of EPI; education needs to address several barriers, including risk of a severe allergic reaction.
