Does the provision of telephone-based extended care on an adaptive (triggered by a study algorithm identifying high risk for weight regain) vs static (provided once per month) schedule improve success at long-term weight-loss maintenance? Results of this randomized clinical trial with 255 participants demonstrated no difference in weight regain from month 4 to 24 in adaptive vs static groups. At month 24, 60% of participants across both groups maintained weight loss of 5% or greater from baseline. These findings suggest provision of extended care on an adaptive vs static schedule did not reduce weight regain; however, the successful maintenance of clinically-meaningful weight loss in both conditions supports the role of extended care for weight-loss maintenance.
