Testosterone Treatment in Prostate Cancer Survivors With Hypogonadism

Is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) safe and efficacious in improving sexual and physical function in men with hypogonadism who have undergone radical prostatectomy for low-grade prostate cancer?In this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind phase 2 clinical trial of 136 men 40 years and older, TRT for 12 weeks significantly improved sexual activity, sexual desire, physical function, and peak aerobic performance (VO peak) compared to placebo without biochemical recurrence during treatment or the 3-month follow-up.Short-term TRT is safe and efficacious in improving sexual and physical function in men with low-grade prostate cancer and hypogonadism treated with radical prostatectomy; however, the trial was neither long enough nor large enough to evaluate clinical recurrence or long-term safety.
