Does magnesium supplementation to treat hypomagnesemia reduce the risk of tachyarrhythmias? In this nonrandomized clinical trial including 171 727 intensive care unit admissions, magnesium supplementation was not associated with a statistically significant reduction in tachyarrhythmias. A quasi-experimental regression discontinuity design was used, allowing for greater confidence that this association can be interpreted causally. In this trial, magnesium supplementation at commonly used doses and cutoffs did not reduce tachyarrhythmias.
