What are the long-term risks of atrial fibrillation (AF) in women with adverse pregnancy outcomes? In a Swedish national cohort study of more than 2 million women followed for up to 46 years after delivery, adjusting for other maternal factors, the specific pregnancy outcomes associated with increased risk for AF included preeclampsia, other hypertensive disorders, large for gestational age, preterm delivery, and gestational diabetes. These findings suggest that early preventive actions and long-term clinical follow-up for timely detection and treatment of AF-related cardiovascular disorders are important in women with adverse pregnancy outcomes.
