Does the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine prevent heart attacks and strokes? In this randomized clinical trial of 4725 adults with increased cardiovascular risk, there was no significant difference in fatal and nonfatal acute coronary syndrome and ischemic stroke over a mean follow-up period of 7 years, although the event rate was lower than expected leading to low power.Study results revealed that the cardioprotective effect hypothesized from earlier animal and human observational studies was not replicated in a large-scale randomized clinical trial, using data linkage for virtual follow-up.
