Long-Term Continuous Monitoring of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
JAMA 10.1001/jama.2025.14891October 09, 2025 at 9:15 AM EDT
What are the incidence and burden of atrial fibrillation (AF) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) as measured by continuous cardiac monitoring? In this prospective cohort study of 198 patients who received an insertable cardiac monitor implant during CABG, 48% developed new-onset AF within 1 year of surgery. The median AF burden in the first year after surgery was 0.07%.The incidence of new-onset AF after CABG is markedly higher than previously reported; however, the AF burden after surgery is very low, questioning current guidelines recommending oral anticoagulation for new-onset AF after CABG.
