October 8, 2024 (Chicago) — The JAMA Network today announces the launch of JAMA+ AI, an engaging, interactive channel that amplifies the best of the JAMA Network’s content exploring the science of artificial intelligence and digital medicine and its application in health and health care.
JAMA+ AI is a window into the premier scientific content, educational reviews, and commentary on AI and medicine published across JAMA, JAMA Network Open, and the 11 JAMA specialty journals. JAMA+ AI builds on that content with new multimedia materials, including interviews with authors, videos that show these tools in action, medical news, and a regular podcast.
Roy Perlis, MD, MSc, has been appointed Editor in Chief of JAMA+ AI. A physician scientist, Dr. Perlis is director of the Center for Quantitative Health and Ronald I. Dozoretz, MD, Endowed Chair at Massachusetts General Hospital, and professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He has authored more than 400 articles reporting original research, focused on the application of machine learning to identify and validate novel treatment targets and interventions for brain diseases.
“Clinicians, researchers, and policymakers have heard the buzzwords, but may feel like they lack the foundation to critically approach articles about AI,” said Dr. Perlis. “JAMA Network readers already have much of the knowledge they need to interpret studies that incorporate AI, if we can demystify the technology. We also want to reach another group who may not yet read JAMA at all: the computer scientists, engineers, and other developers who want to apply AI to impact health.”
In addition to being a unique experience for readers, JAMA+ AI offers the opportunity for authors seeking to publish their work on AI in one of the JAMA Network journals to communicate directly with editors at each of these journals handling this content, including Rohan Khera, MD, MS, director of the Cardiovascular Data Science (CarDS) Lab at Yale University School of Medicine and associate editor for AI at JAMA. Dr. Perlis is the associate editor for AI at JAMA Network Open, in addition to his new role leading JAMA+ AI.
“The JAMA Network has been steadily publishing outstanding research and reviews about AI in clinical practice and I’m delighted to tie the threads together so that readers can easily explore the depth and breadth of our content,” said JAMA Editor in Chief Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, MAS. “JAMA+ AI is the embodiment of the JAMA Network’s commitment to being a platform for elucidation, discussion, and debate of cross-cutting themes in modern medicine.”
