Surgical Approach and Long-Term Operative Recurrence Following Groin Hernia Repair

How do long-term operative recurrence rates for groin hernia compare after robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and open hernia approaches?In this study of 199 163 Medicare beneficiaries who underwent groin hernia repair from January 2010 to December 2021, the long-term cumulative incidence of operative recurrence was marginally higher with robotic-assisted repair (3.78%) compared to open (3.37%) and laparoscopic (3.21%) approaches.Robotic-assisted groin hernia repair has yet to demonstrate a long-term operative recurrence advantage over traditional approaches, and given the overall low rates of operative recurrence, alternative measures of clinical value should be explored as adoption of robotic-assisted techniques expands.
