Prevention of Parastomal Hernia With Funnel-Shaped Intra-Abdominal Mesh vs No Mesh for Rectal Adenocarcinoma Surgery

Is the use of a funnel-shaped parastomal mesh effective and safe for preventing parastomal hernia over a 3-year follow-up after permanent colostomy?In this 3-year follow-up study of a randomized clinical trial, the use of a funnel-shaped mesh significantly reduced both computed tomography–confirmed and clinically diagnosed parastomal hernia rates and resulted in smaller hernia sizes compared with the control group, without an increase in complications during 3 years of follow-up.These findings support the use of a funnel-shaped mesh as an effective and safe preventive strategy to reduce the risk of parastomal hernia after permanent colostomy.
