What are the common contemporary surgeon compensation models and how do these potentially impact physician activities and behavior within the US?This systematic review of 39 studies revealed that compensation structures are heterogeneous across practice setting. Work relative value unit and fee-for-service models emphasize productivity but may undermine teamwork and nonclinical contributions; hybrid and salary-based models offer greater alignment with academic and quality goals but may not appropriately meet the institutions productivity goals.Understanding the trade-offs of each compensation model is crucial for developing payment structures that align the interests of both surgeons and institutions.
