Is it possible to use machine learning to generate computed tomography (CT)–like images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head that are suitable for otology practice? In this diagnostic study of paired CT and MRI from 73 patients, generation of synthetic CT images of the temporal bone from MRI of the head using machine learning was feasible. These images were sufficiently accurate to assess gross anatomy compared with true CT images, and conspicuity of most landmarks was comparable. In this study, synthetic CT made visualization of bony tissues next to soft tissues possible, which may be useful for localization and preoperative planning in otology practice.
