Thyroid Lobectomy and Neck Dissection for N1b Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Are oncologic outcomes for N1b papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) comparable when treated with thyroid lobectomy vs total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine?In this cohort study of 37 patients with N1b PTCs who were treated with thyroid lobectomy and neck dissection and were propensity matched to 37 patients with N1b PTC who were treated with total thyroidectomy, neck dissection, and radioactive iodine, after propensity score matching, there was no significant difference in overall, disease-specific, or recurrence-free survival between each group.The study results suggest that thyroid lobectomy alone is a safe and effective treatment for select patients with N1b PTC.
