Biological Sex and Chronic Rhinosinusitis Diagnosis and Biomarkers
JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery 10.1001/jamaoto.2025.3734October 23, 2025 at 11:00 AM EDT
Is biological sex associated with a diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS)?In this cross-sectional study of a nationwide US database including 258 245 participants, female sex was associated with up to 44% increased odds of CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP); but a 37% reduced odds of CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Female participants also had lower levels of serum eosinophils and IgE compared to male participants. These findings indicate that there is an increased likelihood of CRSsNP diagnosis and decreased likelihood of CRSwNP diagnosis among female compared to male participants, with biomarkers indicating a possible female disposition toward nontype 2 inflammation.
