Surgeon-Performed Transoral Ultrasonography for Detection and Staging of Oropharyngeal Cancers

Does surgeon-performed transoral ultrasonography improve diagnostic evaluation of oropharyngeal cancers compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?This multicenter diagnostic clinical trial including 162 patients with suspected oropharyngeal cancer found that ultrasonographic imaging was associated with higher overall diagnostic accuracy (86%) compared to MRI (76%), with higher specificity (79% vs 46%) and similar sensitivity (90% vs 92%).These findings suggest that transoral ultrasonography for evaluation of suspected oropharyngeal cancer provides higher diagnostic accuracy than MRI in the outpatient setting.
