Ocular Symptoms After Refractive Surgery

What ocular symptom trajectories are observed after refractive surgery, and which baseline factors are associated with prolonged ocular symptoms?In this cohort study of 326 participants undergoing laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), postoperative ocular symptoms followed heterogeneous trajectories. Trajectories characterized by prolonged ocular symptoms after surgery were associated with preexisting ocular surface symptoms and chronic pain conditions outside the eye.These results support the hypothesis that trajectory-based pain assessment identifies clinically meaningful patterns and factors associated with prolonged postoperative symptoms and suggest individualized counseling for higher-risk individuals.
