Brolucizumab in the Treatment of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy

What is the efficacy and safety of intravitreal brolucizumab, 6 mg, vs panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) for treating patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)?In this randomized clinical trial of 689 participants, change from baseline in visual acuity in the brolucizumab group was noninferior to PRP at week 54. The brolucizumab group was also less likely to have PDR at week 54.These findings support the use of brolucizumab as a suitable alternative to PRP in patients with PDR, taking into consideration anticipated visit compliance, cost, and visit frequency when initially choosing between anti–vascular endothelial growth factor therapy and PRP.
