Prevalence and Health Care Disparities of Retinal Conditions

What is the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in the US?In this meta-analysis, the estimated 2022 US age-standardized prevalence (per 100 000 people) was 5677 for AMD, 2710 for DR, 317 for DME, and 214 for RVO. AMD and RVO prevalence was higher in White individuals (vs Black or Hispanic individuals); DR and DME prevalence was higher in Black and Hispanic individuals (vs White individuals).The estimated prevalence of these retinal conditions is substantial, highlighting a large health care burden; understanding the disparities in prevalence may aid in future resource planning.
