Can high-resolution optical coherence tomography (HR-OCT) identify structural correlates of peau d’orange in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE)?In this case-control study, HR-OCT imaging revealed a structural transition within peau d’orange from a multilayered to a monolayer retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) band, corresponding to the severity of Bruch membrane calcification and significantly differing from healthy controls. This layer configuration was confirmed by anatomical identification of the RPE and Bruch membrane in eyes with type 1 macular neovascularization. In this study, HR-OCT enabled the identification of Bruch membrane calcification in PXE, offering a potential imaging biomarker for disease progression in future clinical trials.
