JAMA Ophthalmology 10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2025.2489August 14, 2025 at 11:00 AM EDT
Does semaglutide increase the risk of ocular adverse events? In this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials, semaglutide was not associated with higher risk of ocular adverse events, including diabetic retinopathy. However, it was associated with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).Future studies should implement standardized methods for assessing ocular adverse events to clarify the potential association of semaglutide with NAION.
